Controversial Questions about Wealthy Affiliate

First, let’s address some of the controversial questions that have been coming up about Wealthy Affiliate lately.

Below I provide my own viewpoints in answer to these questions. I also suggest a more reliable way for you to do your own comparison of Wealthy Affiliate with competing products:

Disclaimer: There is no guarantee you will make money or achieve any kind of specific result using the information presented here. Results can vary from person to person.

Q. I heard Wealthy Affiliate doesn’t list the website URLs of their successful members as proof of the effectiveness of their program.

A. As far as I know this is true, and thank goodness for that. I for one wouldn’t want to spend time building a successful website, then have someone advertise to would-be competitors how successful it is. Privacy matters.

Helping others by sharing techniques is one thing. Sharing an exact blueprint with competitors of a successful website you worked hard on is quite another.

Q. I heard Wealthy Affiliate has member websites that don’t rank well in Google or get much search engine traffic (aka. website visitors).

A. If true, let’s review why that could be the case. For starters, Wealthy Affiliate offers a free membership with 2 free websites and free training to set them up, something competitors don’t offer.

As a result, there are bound to be many “tire kickers” that join to try things out, but aren’t very serious about doing the work to make their websites successful. I see this ability to try things out completely free as a strong benefit of Wealthy Affiliate.

Next, premium Wealthy Affiliate members are allowed 50 websites. As a result, there is plenty of leeway to create websites just for following along with the training, or to try out different niche markets or approaches, before deciding what to focus on. I see this freedom to experiment as another strong benefit of Wealthy Affiliate.

For example, I have a website domain (URL) I own that I setup at Wealthy Affiliate many months ago, but haven’t had time to work on yet. It just has a “coming soon” page and not much else. Websites like these will of course not get much traffic from search engines.

It is also important to note that lots of website visitors does not equal financial success. If you focus on ranking your web pages in the search engines for keywords with strong buyer intent, as taught at Wealthy Affiliate, you don’t need a lot of website traffic to be successful.

Lastly, the only person that would know for sure how much traffic and profit a website is generating is the website owner. Unless they choose to share that information, it is private and not available to outside parties for comment.

Q. Are reviews for “make money online” membership products like Wealthy Affiliate unbiased?

A. It is probably best that you assume they are not. Reviews of “make money online” products aren’t the same as Amazon reviews of toasters or deck chairs, where the reviewers are customers with nothing to gain from their reviews.

In my experience, these membership products typically all have their own affiliate programs. Some percentage of their members will choose to promote them, depending on the niche market(s) they choose to focus on. In that case they stand to make a commission for reviewing the product, and suggesting it to others.

You may also find cases where actual competitors (not their affiliates) will launch negative review campaigns against other competitors, which can’t help but be seen as biased. So although you can learn things from reviews in the make money online space, you do need to take them with a grain of salt and do your own due diligence.

Q. So where can you find reviews not biased by the profit incentive for “make money online” membership products?

A. From actual members inside the membership sites themselves. Since they are already members and so are you, there is no monetary gain for them to describe their experiences with the program to other members.

With Wealthy Affiliate you can join free and get access to other members via the internal message boards and live chat. Other programs typically require you to pay up front, but they usually offer refund periods, so you can check them out this way too (if you would feel comfortable asking them for a refund later).

Other membership programs I have tried typically have old fashioned forum interfaces separate from the training, where the questions and answers are few and far between.

Wealthy Affiliate on the other hand has a clean and modern interface with a constant stream of members helping out other members. Member discussions are integrated into the many different sections of Wealthy Affiliate (e.g. at the bottom of each training page so members can discuss and clarify what they just learned).

Try the Wealthy Affiliate Live Chat and chances are you will find other members there to help you out any time day or night. Wealthy Affiliate has lots of (non-monetary) incentives for members to help out other members (community building features).

Some might view contributing to the community in this way as non-productive work. However, check out the positive helping atmosphere it creates within Wealthy Affiliate, and decide for yourself.

I encourage you to NOT take my word for any of this. Instead, join Wealthy Affiliate for free, as well as any competitor program you may be comparing it to, and see the differences for yourself.

Let’s Begin by Reviewing Some Basics

What is affiliate marketing? With affiliate marketing as taught at Wealthy Affiliate, you don’t need any products of your own to sell. Instead, you promote popular products on other websites where you can earn a commission. To learn more, check out my post on Affiliate Marketing. (That post answers the top 3 questions I get.)

What is a niche market? A niche market is nothing more than a group of people interested in a particular thing. You yourself belong to many niche markets related to everything you are interested in at this point in your life. Success in affiliate marketing is strongly tied to picking a profitable niche market to focus on.

In fact, picking a good niche market is such an important part of succeeding with affiliate marketing that I wrote a Free PDF book called 659 Profitable Niche Markets to help you pick a good one that suits you and your unique situation…

How can Wealthy Affiliate help you?

The best way to learn about Wealthy Affiliate is to try it for free. Dive in to the “Getting Started” training and begin interacting with the community. Create your first free website and start to put into practice what you are learning.

Wealthy Affiliate is my #1 recommendation for readers of my PURR Passive Income Power™ book. Why? WA offers my readers many benefits that you can’t get in a book, all in one place.

For starters, Wealthy Affiliate lets my readers try them out for free without having to provide any credit card info, a rare thing these days. Here is a sampling of what Wealthy Affiliate has to offer:

  • simple step-by-step affiliate training, including video training developed over the 10+ years WA has been in business
  • free built-in tools including a keyword planning tool and a free internal website hosting platform
  • helpful community of like-minded entrepreneurs all supporting each other with their online businesses

Introduction to Wealthy Affiliate (WA)

This review of Wealthy Affiliate will cover many aspects of WA, including some solid reasons why it is not a scam. The only reason I bring up the idea of a scam is because all programs of this sort have people asking whether or not a particular affiliate marketing training program is a scam or legit.

When income from my traditional consulting business slowed down, I started an online affiliate marketing business to bridge the gap.

What is right for one group of people may not be right for you. This page is here to help you decide if the Wealthy Affiliate training is right for you. Here are some things to consider:

Wealthy Affiliate has a Free Starter Membership

The definition of a scam is taking money up front and providing no real value. With WA, solid value is offered for free and with no need to enter your credit card, which is the complete opposite of a scam.

So the first and most obvious argument against the idea that wealthy affiliate scams people is that you can try out the WA platform for free. Unlike many programs on the internet, WA’s free starter membership does not require a credit card to be entered, and there is no time limit on your free access to the WA platform.

WA includes access to the free wealthy affiliate blog platform called Site Rubix. It allows you to create a new website completely free and in under 30 seconds. This may sound like hyperbole, but that is just how the Site Rubix blog platform works.

You essentially just enter a website name and subdomain address, and choose a theme for how you want your site/blog to look. Then you click a button and WA’s Site Rubix platform does all the heavy lifting of creating a WordPress database-driven website for you.

The WA Starter membership is sometimes referred to as a trial because, as with all programs that offer good value for free, there is a premium membership level that the starter membership gives you glimpses of.

However, the free starter membership will give you hands-on experience with the platform. It has a very modern look and feel. It is fun and somewhat addictive to use once you get the hang of it. You will get access to enough things with the starter membership to determine if going premium makes sense for you.

Wealthy Affiliate Community

The Wealthy Affiliate community is a major reason why I recommend WA above any other similar program out there. They are so kind and helpful and there are just so many of them! From what I have seen no question goes unanswered. In most cases there are multiple responses very quickly from members trying to help out other members.

Members also write helpful blog posts within the WA membership area that you can read and benefit from. This is a point some Wealthy Affiliate detractors completely miss. People really help each other out and enjoy being part of the Wealthy Affiliate community. It is a very positive atmosphere to be part of.

A key point is that no selling is allowed within Wealthy Affiliate. This means after you join and become part of the community, the help you receive from other members is not biased to make a sale. It is advice based on what is actually working for people and what isn’t. This is in stark contrast to much of the help you find online, where the main point is often to get you to buy something.

Jim Rohn said: “You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.”

If you don’t have people in your life that are knowledgeable about online business, or supportive of your dreams and efforts, then consider getting the Wealthy Affiliate Community on your side. Spend some time with the folks inside WA and you will up the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.

Once you become a WA member you will gain access to all the WA blog posts by other members. You can follow your favorite members and be notified when they create a new blog post. Some members even create their own training modules within WA that you can benefit from. This is on top of the many hours of expert video training and other core training modules within WA.

They say the best way to improve yourself is to stand by the smartest person in the room, and if that person is you, then you are in the wrong room! The Wealthy Affiliate Community is a good room to stand in to soak up the knowledge of those that are a few steps ahead of where you are.

Wealthy Affiliate Success Stories

Any discussion of WA success stories should also include Kyle and Carson, the Wealthy Affiliate founders. Long before they started WA over a decade ago, they were already doing very well online using the principles they now teach others in WA. They have progressed to having their own flagship product which is the Wealthy Affiliate program you see today.

Just like Kyle and Carson, creating your own products is something you can try eventually. Imagine creating a website that becomes popular and gets website visitors every day. To begin with you can monetize that traffic by promoting related affiliate products for a commission.

Then after you gain some traction with your website you can try what Kyle and Carson did and create or source your own product to sell instead of the affiliate product you are promoting. You can take it a step further and setup your own affiliate program for your product. This means you can now get others promoting your product for a commission, in the same way you started out promoting other people’s products. You pay your affiliates a commission if and only if they make a sale.

The mechanics of this may sound difficult, but there are services out there that will manage your affiliates for you for a transaction fee. The world is already setup to do business this way, you don’t have to re-invent the wheel. The point is you can test out your niche and strategy for no cost at Wealthy Affiliate, and hopefully make some affiliate commissions, before you take the time to create or source your own products.

Disclaimer: There is no guarantee that you will earn passive income online, make money, or achieve any kind of specific result using the information or website described on this page or in my book. Results can vary from person to person.

If online business interests you, the main thing is to get started, however small, and see where it leads you. The steering wheel of a car only works if you have some forward momentum. You will make some mistakes along the way, but on the other hand, you will never get anywhere unless you start moving. It can be a fun and very rewarding journey, especially if you avoid common pitfalls and follow some practices developed by others with real world experience, all laid out for you inside the Wealthy Affiliates program.

Wealthy Affiliate University Review

What is the Wealthy Affiliate University? From the free WA keyword tool I can see that people are searching on terms like: “wealthy affiliate university scam”. So this is a question that is on some people’s minds. While WA is certainly not an accredited university and has never presented itself as such, it is easy to see why people might think of it that way. For one thing, it has so many training options, such as:

Classrooms (each contains many training modules including video):

• Getting Started
• WA Affiliate Program
• Keyword, Niche and Market Research
• Everything WordPress
• Authoring & Writing Content
• Search Engine Optimization
• Social Engagement & Marketing
• Website Development & Programming
• Local Marketing
• Video Marketing
• Email Marketing
• The Wealthy Affiliate Platform
• Pay Per Click Marketing

Certification Courses:

• Online Entrepreneur Certification – Getting Started (Level 1)
• Building Your Own Traffic Producing Website (Level 2)
• Online Entrepreneur Certification – Making Money! (Level 3)

Wealthy Affiliate Bootcamp:

There is also a WA Bootcamp to learn how to effectively promote the WA Affiliate Program (described in more detail later in this review). The bootcamp contains a number of advanced affiliate marketing modules, each containing many distinct training modules within each subject area:

• Starting Your Foundation (PHASE 1)

Work From Home with Wealthy Affiliate

Another benefit of WA is you can work from home. Wealthy Affiliate training and the online business you launch during the training can all be done from home whenever you have some spare time. The only deadlines are the ones you set for yourself.

If you are looking for a job or have a job you don’t like, you can be doing this part-time at the same time. This isn’t a matter of quitting something to do this instead. In fact, I would recommend not quitting anything until you are sure the WA lifestyle is a viable option for you.

You can also scale your online business from home. If you begin to see some results, you can begin to re-invest profits to outsource repetitive tasks to others using sites like Upwork to find freelancers to do some of the work for you. Many people do this to leverage their time and accelerate the growth of their business.

At this stage you could become more of a project manager managing the moving pieces of your online business from home. However, before you pay anyone to do work for you, learn a few things and make sure you are in a profitable niche that will allow you to cover the costs of the freelancers. This means doing the work yourself first and making sure you have a profitable process before getting freelancers to help you.

Wealthy Affiliate Membership

Wealthy affiliate members can choose between the free starter membership and the paid premium membership. The best would be to join for free, try things out for a while, then decide if premium makes sense for you. After you join for free you will be able to see the current premium pricing model and any discounts they may have in place. Wealthy Affiliate generally has a discount available for the first month of premium, which you have access to after becoming a free starter member.

Should you buy Wealthy Affiliate and become a premium member?

Is wealthy affiliate worth it? Does in really work? After this Wealthy Affiliates review I hope you are closer to being able to answer that for yourself. In my opinion and experience, the premium training is really very good. I believe it will save you time and help you avoid some wrong turns compared to venturing out on your own. In the end it is up to you to decide if you want to invest some time to see if Wealthy Affiliate can help you achieve your goals.

  • no need to create or source a product of your own to sell
  • no need to collect payments online, you get paid commission
  • no customer issues, the merchants you promote do all that
  • earn automated passive income with easy to create affiliate websites/blogs that never sleep, so you can

How can Wealthy Affiliate offer free websites? I know domain names and hosting cost money. Sounds like BS to me

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi Phoenix,

Good question. With the free Wealthy Affiliate starter membership you do indeed get access to 2 free websites/blogs. The can do this without any extra cost to them for each website added because they put them all on the same domain.

They simply give each member 2 free sub-domains on a domain they already own and is already hosted on their own platform. That domain is siterubix dotcom. So if you wanted to create a blog called mygreatidea your blog would become mygreatidea.siterubix dotcom.

Premium members are able to create many more siterubix sites and can also host their own domains on the Wealthy Affiliate hosting platform (so there is no need to purchase hosting separately, it is all included for the price of the Premium membership).

You can purchase your domain names from within WA or from another provider like namecheap and host it within WA. A lot of people start with free siterubix sites then transfer them to their own domains later after they get some momentum built up in their online business.

Wealthy Affiliate provides a one-click button to migrate siterubix sites to your own domains in a way that retains your search engine rankings. So you can start with a free website/blog and get started for free, then work your way up to your own domain later (or just start with your own domain, but if you do that it isn’t free).

      Hope that helps!

How long will it take start making some money

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi John,

      Thanks for your question.

To begin with, to paraphrase the disclaimers on this page, there is no guarantee that you will make money. Wealthy Affiliate is about starting an online affiliate marketing business. Results can vary from person to person.

However, if you are thinking of giving Wealthy Affiliate a try, let me provide a bit of a reality check. There is a lot of hype out there about doing business online, so people tend to develop unrealistic expectations. To try and put things into perspective, consider the following:

      1) How many hours would you need to put into a traditional job before you get a promotion or a raise? At 35-40 hours per work week that adds up to thousands of hours pretty fast. Approximately 2000 hours in the first year. I’m not suggesting giving up your job here. Just consider the time and effort you put into it to stay even for the most part.

      2) How much time and money would you need to put into improving your education to get a better traditional job? Tuitions at traditional colleges are expensive. You may need to take out a loan that may be difficult to repay later. You may have to quit your job to attend, or attend evenings after work. All for the hope that you will be able to translate that better education into a better job someday.

      3) How much time, money, risk and effort would it take to start a traditional brick and mortar business? Buying into a franchise for example. Compare that to the cost of starting an affiliate marketing business online, which you can try out for free with Wealthy Affiliate (the free starter membership includes free websites and training).

      4) Now imagine if you start to put 3 hours per week into an online affiliate marketing business using techniques taught at Wealthy Affiliate. That is approximately 150 hours per year. Compare that to the previous options discussed.

Would 3 hours per week working on your affiliate marketing business be enough to make progress? I don’t know, it depends on a lot of things. What if you did it for 10 hours per week, or 30 hours? How much progress could you make then?

So your question is hard to answer directly because it depends on so many things, including the effort you are willing to put into it.

The question to answer today is if you are willing to give up an hour or two of your valuable time to join Wealthy Affiliate for free and poke around in there to see what is inside. Try the Getting Started and Affiliate Bootcamp training modules to see if this is something you might enjoy.

The WA platform also allows you to ask questions and connect with other Wealthy Affiliate members. I have personally never seen a question go unanswered in Wealthy Affiliate. It is a very helpful and friendly membership to be a part of.

Then it will be much easier for you to imagine where you might be a year from now with Wealthy Affiliate and without it.

      Hope that helps.

Anyone with other opinions or comments, please add them below.

  • Michael

I am a very new member premium member of WA. It gets overwhelming. Do you know if there is any way you can talk to someone directly by phone with questions? If I ask a question in the chat room how long should you wait for an answer. I think a lot of my frustrations might be migrating thru the website. I’ve tried other online businesses, I really want this one to work.

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi Michael,

Wealthy Affiliate doesn’t have a call center to take phone calls. I think hosting a call center would likely add to the cost for premium members, so they don’t do it. Wealthy Affiliate is an online platform custom designed to provide numerous ways to get your questions answered. As a result, it can be a bit overwhelming until you get used to it. However, as you get into it I think you will appreciate the way the site is designed and the options it provides.

A good starting point is to take the “Get Started Here” training (the big green button at the top left of all Wealthy Affiliate member pages). Just diving into the training like that is a also a good way to get experience navigating through the site, and the getting started training itself explains things more.

Beyond that, here is a short summary of some of the main ways to get help inside Wealthy Affiliate:

      1. Live Chat, which you mentioned. In my experience answers in the Wealthy Affiliate Live Chat are very quick. There are lots of members on there helping each other out, and the founders Kyle and Carson are on there pretty often.

      2. You can Private Message (PM) either of the founders Kyle or Carson and they will get back to you personally. Direct access to the founders is something that distinguishes Wealthy Affiliate from other programs.

      3. The training modules have a place at the bottom to ask questions about that particular training, which is very active with members helping each other out.

      4. There is a search bar across the top of every page in Wealthy Affiliate that is what I use the most. It is very good and provides easy access to everything on the Wealthy Affiliate platform that has been built up over the 10+ years WA has been in business, including blog posts and training that other members create within WA to help each other out.

      Hope that helps.

  • Terry

I’m really dumb when it comes to internet. Will I be selling a product? If so who provides the product! If I’m not selling a product what does website consist of ?

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi Terry,

Good question. With affiliate marketing you will join affiliate programs at companies that have products for sale. Joining these programs is free. The companies provide you with affiliate links and banners to put on your website, so if your website visitors click them and buy something from the other website you get a commission. The first and probably most famous affiliate program is the Amazon associates program where you can get a commission by sending people from your website to Amazon. There are many great companies with affiliate programs. That’s a very basic description of the most basic approach to affiliate marketing. The affiliate training at Wealthy Affiliate provides a lot more detail on finding good affiliate programs and strategies on how to go about it.

      Hope that helps.

  • Scott

    Hi Bradley,
I have to say that this program looks very interesting! I am close to be joining up with the free membership. My question is though, while being in the free membership, can you get a commission or do you have to be a premium customer. I know that the disclaimer states that you might not make any money pending on the person. If I put my best foot forward and say work on my website 5 hours a day , I hope that I would see some profits coming in. Again, they would probably be small at first but hopefully increase in time. Thank you for your time!

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi Scott,

Wealthy Affiliate is primarily teaching affiliate marketing. That means you build your own websites and promote outside affiliate programs like the Amazon Associates program to earn commissions. You can do that whether you are a free or premium Wealthy Affiliate member (or even if you aren’t a member at all). Being a WA member at either level provides training, tools, and an online community to help you do it. I offer a short 2 minute video in the welcome email to my Success Journal if you want to see a live demo of how it actually works including how to signup for the free Amazon Associates affiliate program.

      Hope that helps.

  • Sal madaffari

Does wealth affiliate use the CPM compensation model?

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi Sal,

No, as with most affiliate programs these days the main compensation model is Pay Per Sale (PPS). That means you get a commission if you refer someone who buys. Of course you can take what you learn at Wealthy Affiliate and join other affiliate programs that offer different compensation models, such as Cost Per Action (CPA), Cost per Click (CPC), or cost per mille (CPM, cost per estimated 1000 views).

You can promote any kind of affiliate offer you like on the affiliate style websites you will create within Wealthy Affiliate. Part of the process is researching a good niche topic you want to create a website on, researching the kinds of affiliate offers that would work well in that niche, then joining those affiliate programs and promoting their products from your website (that is the most basic approach).

Wealthy Affiliate also teaches more advanced topics like Email Marketing to promote affiliate products for commission. For an example of how email marketing works, you can join my Success Journal.

      Hope that helps.

  • Steve

In addition to the monthly fee for the premium membership, what other costs would I need to incur — such as Pay-per-Click costs, to drive traffic to my website(s).

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi Steve,

It all depends on the strategy you choose. Wealthy Affiliate does teach pay-per-click (ppc) marketing, but it isn’t the recommended strategy for beginners. You need to get a lot of things right before you can make ppc profitable. Instead, Wealthy Affiliate will also teach you how to find keywords that aren’t that competitive and also how to write blog posts about those topics/keywords that will attract free search engine traffic. If you choose this approach and stick with the free websites WA provides, there are no extra costs. Those free websites are subdomains on their siterubix platform.

If/when you decide you want your own domain name you can move the free websites over with one click, and WA takes care of all the details like setting up the redirects from old site to new site so that Google will continue to find your pages. If you do this you need to pay for your domain name, which is around $10 to $15 per year depending on where you purchase the domain name from (you can do this from within WA if you like). Paying for your own domain name is a cost of doing business for all online businesses whether you join Wealthy Affiliate or not.

Joining affiliate programs that will pay you a commission for sales you send their way are free to join.

Beyond that there are additional services you might want to pay for eventually like services to manage your newsletter subscribers if you choose to add a signup form for an email newsletter to your website. Again, it all depends on the strategies you choose. However, to get started with basic affiliate marketing using search engine optimization (seo) techniques taught at Wealthy Affiliate can be done with no additional costs.

      Hope that helps.

  • Phongyue

I’m a senior in high school and am working. I going to have to quit my job soon however and find a different job that is flexible and gives more hours. I do not want to start with a job a fast food place or grocery store. Is this site really low risk? and What if I try it out and it doesn’t work out? Will I be able to back out?

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi Phongyue,

Good for you for going to school and working on the side. In that same spirit, when you get out of school you may want to consider working and doing online business on the side. At least in the beginning until you start to see some results, which does take time whether you join Wealthy Affiliate or not. If you can be working and making money while your website starts to gain traction in Google for example, so much the better. I personally still work a full time job and do my online business on the side. I like the idea that my online business income is extra money rather than my main source of income. Less stress and more fun that way in my opinion. Although I do plan to let go of my full time job eventually.

As to whether you can back out of Wealthy Affiliate, absolutely you can. You don’t even have to spend money to try it. Use the free websites they provide with the free Starter Membership. Go through the free training and start working on your website and see if you like doing it. If you don’t like it for whatever reason just stop doing it, the only thing you will have lost is the time you put into it.

I personally don’t know of any other way you could try a business out for free to see if you like it. If you are worried about the risk don’t upgrade to Wealthy Affiliate Premium until you either start to see some results from your website to pay for it, or until you find a job so you can afford it. If you do upgrade to Wealthy Affiliate premium you can cancel your membership anytime by going into your Account Settings area in Wealthy Affiliate and clicking the “Stop Billing & Close Account” button. Or if you decide against Wealthy Affiliate Premium, you could just see how far you can get on your own and see what you can learn from your two best friends YouTube and Google.

Although if you compare what Wealthy Affiliate premium costs compared to an actual university, and the fact that you can do it on the side while having a job to pay the bills, it is a pretty good deal in my opinion. For example, you get a good practical education in online business and you don’t need to go into debt with student loans. On the other hand if your calling is more along the lines of doctor or engineer, then traditional university is of course the way to go.

Hope that helps you sort out your direction for after graduation! I wish you the best of luck with whatever path you choose.

    Hi Brad,
I haven’t even started with WA nor read any of your books, but I must say that this is so far the most honest approach I have ever seen and want to believe that it is the path I want to take in my search for a better future, not a get rich quick methods that often lead to frauds.
    Many thanks!

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi Genesis,

You are welcome, and thanks for that feedback, I really appreciate it. I wish you the best in creating a positive and profitable future for yourself.

Please forgive me if you have answered this question already. I’m not quite understanding what the content of my website will be. I understand I’ll receive banners, links, etc. for my website for the affiliate marketing (AM). However, what exactly will be on my website? For example, if I love fitness, where will the fitness info on my site come from? Is it my blog/experiences/pictures that make up the site? Will my site be composed of info from other sites? I know people won’t come to my site to see my random pictures & stories from my life. Once I find my niche market, what will they see beside AM links? This is the only thing I’m not understanding. Thanks!

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi Rebecca,

Original content is always best, so you would either write the content yourself or outsource the writing to someone else. For example, you are reading this page because I wrote an original “review article” about Wealthy Affiliate.

How do you know what to write about? Wealthy Affiliate has you covered there. They have a keyword tool that will help you find keyword phrases related to your niche (that you can write content about). The keyword tool will tell you approximately how many people are searching on each phrase per month and how competitive it is.

To use your example you would type something like “fitness info” into the keyword tool and it would return many related keywords for you to choose from. I just went over to Wealthy Affiliate and tried that and it returned keywords like “fitness program” “fitness conditioning” “health fitness nutrition” etc.

The Wealthy Affiliate training explains how to use the keyword tool, how to write content using those keyword phrases so Google will find it, and how to find affiliate programs to promote related products and services from your content.

I also created a short 2 minute video showing how to use the Wealthy Affiliate keyword tool and how to join one of the larger affiliate programs where you can find lots of related products to promote for virtually any niche. It comes included in the welcome email for people that subscribe to my free Success Journal. If you are interested in that you can subscribe to the Success Journal here (it comes with a free eBook to help you pick a profitable niche).

      Hope that helps.

  • Brian Downie

    Hi Brad. Awesome review.
I have seen many WA members with similar blogs/websites that promote WA. I would really like to see a (successful/popular) blog or website that a WA member has made that has no direct connection to WA. I really just want to see if the WA training has paid off for them in something other than promoting WA.

    • PurrAdmin

Thanks Brian. That is of course a very good question. The reason most people don’t talk a lot about that is because they don’t want to advertise their success and invite a lot of competition from others in the Wealthy Affiliate community, the very people that are actively learning how to compete. They prefer to fly under the radar so to speak. And yes, there may be people out there that have never done anything else other that promote Wealthy Affiliate. However, that in itself is quite a competitive niche, so if they can do well there they are doing something right.

But since you asked, I would like to give you an example of using the Wealthy Affiliate approach on a non-WA keyword that I rank #1 in Google for and earn income for, which will be inviting some competition on myself. But first, I would point out that this blog you are on now, my blog, is not primarily about Wealthy Affiliate. The page you are on now is just one of many pages on the site. If you go to my homepage you will see this site is primarily an author site for my PURR Passive Income Power book and Success Journal with a bunch of blog posts listed at the bottom that are of interest to my book readers (only one of which is about Wealthy Affiliate). These non-WA related pages could be on any site, so I would say they have no direct connection to Wealthy Affiliate (which I believe is what you asked).

So if you go into google and search on samcart vs shopify you should see this blog show up as the first organic search result (e.g. the first one after all the ads). That position may vary slightly depending on where you are searching from, here on the west coast of Canada it is currently ranking #1, although since I’m telling everyone here that may not last. I get a small amount of free search traffic to that page every day, which adds up over time.

If you go into the Wealthy Affiliate keyword tool and type in samcart vs shopify you will see that it is a very low competition keyword, and it is related to a product with an affiliate program. When it comes to keyword research, that’s a good thing to look for.

So to relate this back to your question, that is a non-WA keyword on a mostly non-WA website that I am ranking #1 for in google using the approach taught at Wealthy Affiliate.

      Hope that helps.

  • Jaco Rheeder

Good day. This might be a strange question. Can you do this from a mobile device only if you don’t have a pc/laptop to start with?

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi Jaco,

I think it would be possible to do this with only a smartphone but you may find it a bit frustrating after awhile working with that small interface and no hard keyboard. For example, the websites you would create in Wealthy Affiliate use the popular Wordpress software, which is what this site you are on also uses. I sometimes do updates to this site using my smartphone, which works pretty well since the Wordpress admin area where you make changes is “mobile responsive”, which is to say it is optimized to work well on a mobile phone. However, doing it all from a smartphone would be challenging I think. Anyway, the nice thing about Wealthy Affiliate is you can try it out for free from the link at the top of this page. Then you can watch the free training videos and setup your first site for free to try it out for yourself.

  • Theresa

Can you give me an estimate of the membership fee? For example, the lowest plan available?

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi Theresa,

The Starter Membership at Wealthy Affiliate is free of charge, just go signup, no credit card required (the link is at the top of this page).

  • roy Schoenberg

I would REALLY appreciate if someone-anyone-could explain to me what this is all about. i do not understand.

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi Roy,

The best next step may be if somebody showed you with videos what it is all about. That is the easiest way to learn for most people. If you subscribe to my Success Journal, the very first welcome email contains 2 short videos that I think would clear it up for you pretty quick. You can also simply join Wealthy Affiliate from the link at the top of this page for more free videos. A lot of work has gone into both of these free resources. They are custom designed to help people understand what this is all about.

      Hope that helps.

  • Terry Coughlin

    Good information-thanks.

  • Lisa Dozier

Brad, I am scared to death of online success stories. They are just so phony. However when a person really wants to learn from the ground floor up as how to make this happen you sound like the go-to-person. I think I’m gonna try it.
What exactly are website domains? How do they work, what would be a website name, and also what are subdomains, what are they for? Show an example please. I warn you though Brad I will have some what one would call some “dumb questions”, but to me, the only dumb question is one that is not asked. Thank you in advance.

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi Lisa,

A website domain is the website address (URL) for a website. For example, the domain of this website you are on now is purrpassiveincome.com. I had to register that domain with a “registrar” (I use namecheap, you can google them). There is a yearly charge for a domain name (around $10 – $15 per year). After you “own” a domain you point it to your hosting account, where you would host your website.

There are many website hosting companies to choose from. They would provide you with their “nameserver addresses”, which you would enter for your domain name at your registrar (e.g. namecheap). After that you are all set to start building your website, which could be done with Wordpress or many other website builders. The site you are on now uses Wordpress. It is all easier than it might sound if you are new to this.

One of the benefits of Wealthy Affiliate premium is you can do everything I just mentioned right in Wealthy Affiliate. You can register domain names with them and they are also a web host to host your website. Wealthy Affiliate also makes it easy to install Wordpress with a few clicks and they provide video and other training to show you how to do it all.

My thoughts are if you are going into Wealthy Affiliate premium you may as well use their webhosting which comes with premium at no extra charge. However, I still use namecheap as my registrar as that gives me the flexibility to easily change web hosts any time (and domains cost something no matter where you register them, including at Wealthy Affiliate). If later on I wanted to move my domain/website I would just take a backup of my site, move it to a new web host, then update my nameservers in namecheap to point to the new web host.

If you already have domains registered at Wealthy Affiliate that isn’t really a problem either as you can move domains to a different registrar at a later date, it is just a few extra steps if you wanted to move on later. I personally use the webhosting at Wealthy Affiliate but the site you are on now uses another web host, just because I had this site before I learned about Wealthy Affiliate and I am too lazy to change it, and web hosting costs are such a small expense compared to my online business income that it isn’t worth my time to change it. I’m the kind of person that likes to leave things alone that are working and focus on building my business with the limited time I have to work on it (which is limited because I have a full time job, family etc.)

Ok, this answer is getting a bit long, but I still want to answer your second question about sub-domains. I don’t have any subdomains on this website you are on now, but if I did they would look like subdomainname.purrpassiveincome.com. Subdomains don’t cost anything extra, you just register and pay for the domain name itself. That is why companies like Wealthy Affiliate can offer free websites to try out affiliate marketing. They just give you an easy way to create a subdomain on a domain that they own.

You can choose whatever subdomainname you want at Wealthy Affiliate (as long as it isn’t already taken). With that free website you can do all the same things you can do as if you had your own domain in Wealthy Affiliate (e.g. install Wordpress with a few clicks etc.) Sub domains at Wealthy Affiliate provide an excellent opportunity for you to try out affiliate marketing (e.g. making money online without a product of your own to sell) to see if you like it. Free subdomains are included in the free Starter Membership at Wealthy Affiliate, along with enough free affiliate training to get you up and running.

If you decide you do want to get serious about an online affiliate marketing business, then you will want to purchase your own domain at some point so that you own and control your own “virtual real estate”. With Wealthy Affiliate premium this is easy to do. They have a one click option to move the website on your subdomain to your own domain. They do it in a way that preserves whatever google rankings you achieved with your sub-domain website (e.g. using 301 redirects etc.). Or you can just consider the sub-domain website a learning experience to go through the training with, then start a new website with your own domain when you are ready.

Ok, my wife just called, time to go!

      Hope that helps.

Do you make money in WA by selling some type of product, or just by enrolling people into WA?

    • PurrAdmin

      Hi John,

Wealthy Affiliate teaches affiliate marketing, which is a way to make money online without a product of your own to sell. Most companies have affiliate programs these days where you can promote their products online to earn a commission through special affiliate links that they provide you after you join their affiliate programs (which are free to join). For example, Amazon has their Amazon Associates program where you can promote any product on Amazon and earn a commission.

Wealthy Affiliate also has an affiliate program of their own where you can earn commissions by promoting them. You get access to the WA affiliate program as soon as you become a free starter member. As a Wealthy Affiliate member you can choose to promote any kind of product for companies that have affiliate programs, including Wealthy Affiliate, or you can do both at the same time. They have training to support you no matter which direction you decide to take.

For a more detailed explanation of affiliate marketing and common questions people have about it, check out my blog post here:

      Hope that helps.
